The Ruth Sonntag Nussenzweig Award constitutes a targeted positive action measure aimed at addressing the persistent underrepresentation of women and non-binary scientists in senior and independent leadership positions in immunology. Named in tribute to Prof. Ruth Sonntag Nussenzweig, a pioneering leader in immunology and malaria research, the award celebrates her groundbreaking contributions and dedication to advancing global health. By recognizing and supporting emerging female scientists, the prize aims to foster greater gender equity in science and encourage more women to excel in immunology and related fields.

Target group / career stage
The prize honors mid-career rising female and non-binary scientists in the field of Immunology working in Austria, with maximum 15 years of scientific experience after the PhD, who have demonstrated outstanding promise and innovation in their independent basic, translational or clinical research. The prize consists of a cash award, plus support for travel, accommodations and registration to attend an award ceremony to be held at the next Annual Meeting of the ÖGAI, 4-6 November 2026, Vienna, Austria.

The deadline for submission is April 30, 2026.
Applicants must provide (in a single PDF):

  • A letter outlining the research achievements, their novelty and importance to the field (candidate)
  • Curriculum Vitae, including list of the 5 most important papers and additional research achievements (no more than 3 pages)
  • List of publications

To be eligible, applicants must hold a current research position in Austria and must have a standing ÖGAI membership.
